What is Dialysis?
March 22, 2022
In keeping up with the most up-to-date medicine and treatments, we are extremely excited that we will be offering dialysis at Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital at some point in 2022!
What is dialysis?
Dialysis is a procedure to remove toxins, waste products or excess fluid from the blood of a patient. The blood is removed from a catheter, cleaned by a machine, and returned to the body.
What machine are we using?
Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital uses PrisMax state-of-the-art technology for dialysis.
Who needs dialysis?
Patients may be referred for dialysis should they have the following conditions:
- Certain types of toxicities
- Immune mediated diseases
- Managing fluid overload
We are hoping to expand our dialysis abilities even further but for now the patients we will not be able to dialyze include:
- Chronic kidney cases
If you believe your pet could benefit from dialysis:
Please have your pet be examined by your primary veterinarian. If dialysis is discussed, the veterinarian would then call a specialist here at Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital to schedule a referral appointment for your pet (when dialysis is officially running at the hospital).
How much will it cost?
Cost will vary case by case and an estimate will be provided to you prior to the start of any treatments.
